How much will my new website cost to build?

This is probably the top question that we receive on a daily basis. Websites are not a one-size-fits-all product because every website and business is different: however, in this post, we’d like to pull back the curtain a bit and tell you how we calculate the cost of your new website. We’ll also include some common costs associated with hosting and maintaining a website.

Website Design Costs –
$1000-$2000 for an average sized site (less than 15 pages)

If a customer hasn’t already worked with a designer in coming up with a color palette, logo and wireframes for a new site, we work with the customer to get a sense of the type of design they like. Often they are able to look through our Portfolio and see a site that is similar to their business. We also ask clients for websites that they like so we can get a feel for their taste. Depending on the amount of design work needed, most website design costs run between $1,000-$2,000 for an average website.

Website Development Costs –
$2,000-4,000 for an average sized site (less than 15 pages)

One the design has been approved, the actual coding begins. If we are working with an existing WordPress template that doesn’t require much modification, that helps us keep our development costs toward the lower end. However, we usually work with clients who want more flexibility than a set theme. We really like working with Divi from Elegant Themes because of the flexibility it provides. It’s also very easy for clients to maintain and update on their own. This option gives us the ability to build a website with a custom look and feel for a fraction of the cost.

Website Custom Features –
From $1500 depending on the features

Most clients need something more than a basic website can provide. For example, maybe they offer online or e-courses, or need a contact form integration with a mailing list. Another example is a custom search engine or automatic domain registration. The sky is really the limit when it comes to custom website features, but it’s important to factor these costs into your website budget if you know you will need custom features.

Website Hosting –
From $20-$200 per month

Once your website has been designed and built, it needs to find a home on the Internet. There are so many hosting options and prices available that we could write 20 posts just on hosting alone! We really like and recommend Managed WordPress Hosting and have used both GoDaddy and Flywheel. The costs run between $20-$50 per month and the level of security and backups are well worth the price.

Website Maintenance –
From $250 per quarter

Once your site has been built, found a home on the Internet, it then needs to be maintained. This is the MOST important part of the website process and a very necessary cost in our opinion. Unmaintained sites are a haven for people who want to do bad things. If your website has an outdated CMS such as WordPress or plugins that haven’t been updated to the latest version, you run a huge risk of being hacked. We always add website maintenance into our proposals because we feel so strongly about this. We take the time to back up your current website version, update everything on a staging server and test all of the updates before we touch your live website. We can also help if you’ve run into a problem trying to update your website yourself.
